The Callejon del Beso, or Alley of the Kiss, is a famous landmark in Guanajuato, Mexico and marks the location of the sad folk tale of Carmen and Luis. The pair fell in love and wished to marry. Carmen’s father had promised her to another man and forbade the lovers to meet. So Luis secretly purchased the house across from Carmen’s so their balconies were almost touching. Carmen’s father caught them meeting under the moon and plunged a knife into his daughter’s heart. With a kiss on Carmen’s dead white hand, Luis said good bye and the alley got its name. The alley is especially romantic in the evening light and offers an architectural delight from the stone walkway.
