A spring frost dusts the brilliant blue of these Camas flowers seen here in a grassy meadow in the Cascade Mountain Range in Southern Oregon. Camas was a staple food for Native Americans and settlers. It was readily available because its bulb is able to thrive on the prairie as well as in marshy areas of streams and rivers. The blooms may range in color from pale pink and lavendar to deep purple. The White Camas variety is toxic and dangerous to livestock and humans.
