A view of Castle Crags in Northern California was taken from the view point at the trailhead near the Castle Crags State Park campground. The dramatic and well-known wall of granite intruded the mostly volcanic and sedimentary area sometime in the Jurassic period. Heavy glaciation eroded much of the softer surrounding rocks leaving the towering spires exposed. Located just west of Interstate 5, between the towns of Castella and Dunsmuir, the crags are situated along an ancient trade and travel route known as the Siskiyou Trail. Strained relations between Gold Rush miners and local Native American populations resulted in the 1855 Battle of Castle Crags. The crags are now a popular hiking and rock climbing destination.
