This gnarly old oak tree in the Cosumnes River Wildlife Preserve, California twists and turns and reaches its smallest branches toward the light. The Cosumnes River, in the Central Valley and only 80 miles long, has frequent winter and spring overflows which foster the growth of native plants and wildlife. Hundreds of species of birds and plants are found in the preserve which encompasses and protects thousands of acres of wetlands and woods.
