A dramatic purple sky looms over Crater Lake and Wizard Island in this sunrise photo I took in late spring of 2004. Crater Lake National Park is located in the Cascade Mountain Range of southern Oregon. The lake is in a volcanic crater or caldera created by the eruption of Mt. Mazama. It is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,949 feet. Solely fed by snow and rain, it boasts the clearest water of any lake in the world.
