Crater Lake Lodge in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, was originally constructed in 1915. It prospered for many years as a destination for travelers to the majestic lake. Due to lack of funds to maintain the structure it deteriorated to an unsafe condition and was closed in 1989. It was scheduled for demolition but was saved by public demand and completely renovated using as much original material as possible. Reopened in 1994, it is now a premier attraction in Oregon. This winter view underscores the precise engineering required to maintain the integrity of the building under very heavy snow loads.
