I am very excited to announce that my photo titled Lunar Eclipse Over Mt. Shasta has been selected as the category winner in the Creative Digital Category in the 2008 Windland Smith Rice International Photography Awards which is an international competition sponsored by Nature’s Best Photography Magazine. The 2008 contest received over 20,000 entries.

The award-winning photographs will be published in the 2008 Fall Awards Special Collector’s Edition of Nature’s Best Magazine, due out mid-November. In addition, my photograph will be featured in the annual exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, one of the most prestigious and highly-visited museums in the world, running from mid-November through April 2009.

Nature’s Best will be posting the winning images on www.NaturesBestPhotography.com by the end of November.   In addition, the NATURE’S BEST PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS will be displayed in galleries on AOL Pixcetera and MSNBC.

This is a very exciting recognition of my photography and I’m honored to be selected along with the other winners. I’ll post more information about the exhibit and magazine as it becomes available.

Recent Developments For Outdoor Exposure Photography

Recent Developments For Outdoor Exposure Photography
The Northwest Magazine Cover

Over recent months there have been some new developments for Outdoor Exposure Photography that are worth sharing. A new lifestyle magazine called Northwest, which is being distributed in 15 States through Barnes and Noble and Borders Book Stores, has begun publishing many of my images, including the cover of the upcoming issue. Photo Researchers, a large stock photography agency in New York, is now representing my photography and marketing it to publishers across the US and in 35 other countries. I am also being represented by a new art consultancy out of Colorado called Western Photo Gallery which sells fine art prints to corporate clients. BetterPhoto.com is the premier website for online photography courses and critiques from top professionals. Their monthly photo contests receive as many as 40,000 entries and their newsletter goes out to over 25,000 individuals. Several of my photos have recently been recognized by BetterPhoto including two second place awards and two photo of the day features.

Sean Bagshaw Photography Screensavers

Sean Bagshaw Photography Screensavers
Rogue Valley Screensaver

One of the things I enjoy most about being a photographer is sharing my images, vision and experiences with others, and I’m always looking for ways to make my photography accessible. Fine art prints are a great way to experience the full impact of my work, but books, posters, cards, slide shows and even my website are other ways that I have been able to share my photos publicly. For quite a while I have wanted to offer sceensavers featuring collections of my images because it is an inexpensive way for people to acquire a collection of my work, but I didn’t have a good way to create screensavers files.

I’m excited to say that I have found a solution to that problem. A software application I recently discovered, called Pictures to EXE, allows me to create stand alone screensaver files that can be delivered via email and easily installed in the Windows screensaver menu. Each screensaver can also be run as a slide show, independent of the screensaver mode.

landscape and nature screensaver

At this time I have completed two screensaver collections, which are available HERE. The Landscape and Nature screensaver features 30 of my most dramatic and well known outdoor images. The Rogue Valley screensaver is a collection of 30 iconic images from around the Rogue Valley which is my home.

In the future I will be adding additional screensaver collections with themes like Winter, Mountains, Adventure and Water. The images in my screensavers have been optimized for viewing on a computer monitor and have amazing color, sharpness and contrast.

The screensavers are safe and easy to use on any Windows based PC computer. They arrive as an email attachment which you save on your hard drive. Once saved, right click on the file and select “Install” and it will be added to your screensaver menu. By double clicking on the screensaver file it can also be viewed as a slide show independent of the screensaver mode.

Unfortunately, the screensaver file format created by Pictures to EXE is not supported by the Mac operating system, so my screen savers are only available to PC users at this time.

Fun Photography at the Montague Balloon Fair

October 24, 2007 by Sean Bagshaw Leave a Comment

Fun Photography at the Montague Balloon Fair
balloon fair

A year ago I was traveling through the southwest right about the time of the world famous Albuquerque International Balloon Festival. With as many as 700 colorful hot air balloons taking to the skies it is a big attraction for photographers and I was tempted to add it to my itinerary. However, I had also heard about the crowds, traffic jams, shortage of places to stay and all the other headaches you would expect with any event as big and widely known. I decided to pass.

balloon fair

This year I found a great substitute in the Montague Rotary Balloon Fair in northern California the third week of September. What it lacks in sheer volume of balloons it more than makes up for with a great setting in the Mt. Shasta Valley, friendly organizers and balloon teams, easy access, on sight camping, plentiful parking and minimal crowds. Spectators have access to the launching field and can walk among the balloons during the inflation and launch process, making this an easy photo op for anyone with a camera. Spectators can even volunteer to crew for a balloon team, helping them to inflate and launch as well as chase, land and pack their balloons.

balloon fair

This year about 30 balloons took part in the fair. While a far cry from 700, 30 balloons is still an impressive site and makes for an exhilarating visual and photographic experience. Montague is about seven miles east of Yreka, just off of Interstate 5 in northern California. Montague is less than an hour from where I live in southern Oregon. I was so enthralled photographing the balloons on Friday morning that I returned on Saturday and Sunday as well. I recommend this event to anyone, especially families.

WPOTY

The Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is one of the largest and most esteemed international photography competitions in the world. This year was the biggest on record with over 32,000 entries from 78 different countries. While not a category winner, I’m am very proud that my photograph “Future Forest” was a finalist in the competition. The winners of this competion represent the best outdoor photographers in the world. Past winners include well know photographers such as Frans Lanting, Doug Allen and Karl Ammann. Considering the quantity and quality of entries and the rigorous three month judging process, I am honored that one of my images made it to the final round.

You can check out past year’s winners at the competition website HERE. This year’s winners will be posted to the site in late October in conjunction with publishing the winning photos in the November issue of BBC Wildlife Magazine and the openning of the exhibition at the Natural History Museum of England.

Interview With Galen Rowell's Daughter On Sierra Club Radio

February 7, 2007 by Sean Bagshaw Leave a Comment

Gallen Rowell was one of the most prolific and well known outdoor and nature photographers in the second half of the 20th century. At a time when most outdoor photographers were struggling under the mass of large format photography equipment, Galen combined the emerging lightweight SLR technology with his legendary athletic ability to pioneer a whole new genre of adventure and nature photography. He would often combine his photography with first ascents of remote peaks or expeditions to unexplored regions. Any climbing guidebook for the western United States and Alaska is full of routes he established and climbing literature is full of Galen stories. I actually knew about Galen from his climbing exploits before I was familiar with him as a photographer. His energy, sense of wonder and adventure and commitment to his “on the move” style of photography enabled him to create some of our most iconic images of the Earth’s wild places.

Galen, more than any other photographer, is responsible for my interest in photography and the style and approach I use. But that is nothing unusual in the outdoor photography world. Galen inspired an entire generation of adventure seekers and outdoor photography enthusiasts. Galen was so prolific and his images so enduring that I often have difficulty distinguishing between my own photographic voice and his influence on the way I see a scene, something I find to be a curse and a gift at the same time.

Tragically Galen and his wife, Barbara Cushman Rowell, died in a plane crash near their home in Bishop, California in 2002 while they were both very much in the prime of their creative careers. If you are not already familiar with Galen’s photography you should visit the Web site of his photography business, which he called Mountain Light, at www.mountainlight.com.

Galen and his photography were tightly linked with the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club Website’s new radio show and podcast called Sierra Club Radio, has a recent feature interview with Nicole Rowell-Ryan, Galen Rowell’s daughter. On the show, Ms. Rowell-Ryan talks about her memories of her father as an artist and an adventurer.

You can listen to the interview with Nicole Rowell-Ryan at http://www.sierraclubradio.org/. The show aired on February 3, 2007. The podcast is also available in the iTunes music store- just search for “Sierra Club Radio.”

Here is what the Sierra Club has to say about their new broadcasts:

“The Sierra Club recently launched a weekly radio show which is designed to help meet the mounting demand for “green” news — information Americans can use as consumers, as citizens, as neighbors and parents to make responsible choices and to connect to the growing environmental community. We have posted the podcast on our website, http://www.sierraclub.org, and also on the iTunes music store (just search “Sierra Club”). The show is also broadcast in the San Francisco Bay area on 960am The Quake at 3:30 pm on Saturdays, and is soon to be syndicated on public radio around the country.
      Â
The show spotlights in-depth conversations with a wide range of environmental experts and activists, artists, filmmakers, and authors inspired by nature. It also features Sierra Club content – including lifestyle tips from Sierra magazine’s Green Life editor Jennifer Hattam and Mr. Green, Bob Schildgen; in-depth interviews with Sierra Club Books authors and contributors to Sierra magazine; and political observations and commentary by Executive Director Carl Pope. The program highlights stories from the Sierra Club’s conservation work and grassroots fieldwork, and hopefully it will encourage people to think more carefully every day about how we can each do our part to live green and protect the environment.”

Confetti On Exhibit At Art Wolfe Gala Gallery Opening In Seattle

February 2, 2007 by Sean Bagshaw Leave a Comment

In early April 2006 I learned that one of my most popular photos, Confetti, had been selected as a winner in the Environmental Photography Invitational (www.epinvitational.com). Art Wolfe (www.artwolfe.com), a well-known nature photographer from Washington, partnered with the organizers of the Environmental Photography Invitational to display the winning photos for the gala opening of his new gallery and photography school in Seattle. The purpose of the photo contest is to bring awareness to the environment and environmental issues through the use of photographic imagery. The exhibit will be on display at the Art Wolfe Gallery through the end of June.

Ashland Artisan Gallery Opens Monday January 8th

 gallery

On Monday, January 8, Ashland Artisan Gallery opens to the public. Located at 163 East Main, right across the street from the Varsity Theater, Ashland’s newest and most exciting gallery features the work of a hand selected group of talented local artists brought together by oil painter and owner, Denise Baxter. I am very excited and honored to be part of this group. Many people who receive my newsletter do not live in southern Oregon, but everyone, near and far, is invited to stop by the gallery and say hi anytime you are in the area.

In addition to permanently exhibiting and selling my photography in Ashland Artisan Gallery, I’m also a working member and will be available to meet with customers on Monday afternoons and at other times by appointment. It will be really nice to have a permanent location to exhibit my photos in Ashland.

AAG

In addition to Denise’s paintings and my photography, the gallery features woodwork, custom furniture, metalwork, jewelry, stained glass, mosaics, custom designed throws, watercolors and much more. Ashland Artisan Gallery has beautiful, masterfully crafted and locally produced art with enough variety to match any fine home or special occasion. Adding to the experience of visiting Ashland Artisan Gallery is the fact that it is entirely staffed by members, so customers will always have the opportunity to meet the artists. The gallery will also be part of the First Friday Art Walks and will host other events including art classes on Sunday mornings. I look forward to seeing you there!

Location: Rogue Rock Gym CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS

Date: Saturday, January 27, 2007

Time: Show starts at 7:00 PM

Tickets: $8 in advance, $9 at the door (kids 13 and under half price, 5 and under free)

Advanced tickets available at The Rogue Rock Gym, The Ashland Outdoor Store, Flywheel Bicycle Solutions and McKenzie Outfitters.

In May of 2006, Mt. Shasta climber Laurie Bagley became only the 19th US woman to summit the world’s highest peak. 2006 was the second most deadly climbing season in Mt. Everest history and became the subject of a documentary series that has been showing on the Discovery Channel. Laurie and her climbing group managed to be the only team on the north side of the mountain last year that did not sustain fatalities, injuries or frostbite.

Laurie is a careful and humble climber whose physical strength is only matched by her inner strength and concern for others. The story of her inspiring personal challenge on Mt. Everest and her motivation to attempt the climb to raise money and awareness for the poorest children of India should not be missed.

You are invited to attend this once in a lifetime evening with Laurie as she shares her powerful story in words and pictures with a media show produced by Outdoor Exposure Photography. We hope to see you there.
