Photo Cascadia’s 2021 Year In Photography
As a member of the Photo Cascadia team I am happy to mark another year-end with our traditional Year In Photography highlights reel. We are thankful to be healthy and getting out in the world more than we did in 2020. David, Kevin, and Zack have been back doing field workshops. Sean and Erin went to Maine as instructors at the Out of Acadia Conference. Erin did a lot of work with Canon this year and Chip was able to perform with the Spokane Symphony again. Some of us traveled a bit as well, mostly inside the country, but also to Iceland and Slovenia. The biggest team project this year has been photographing for an upcoming book on the state of Washington.
I hope you enjoy the tenth edition of our annual Year In Photography video. I get a kick out of looking back at the landscapes, photographs, adventures, projects, and team antics that made the year memorable and I hope you do too.
Learning to See and Work with the Light in Landscape Photography on The Understand Photography Show
The Understand Photography Show is an interview-style podcast about travel, nature, and fine art photography. I had a great conversation with host, Peggy Farren about knowing and using light in your landscape photography. This is a behind-the-scenes look at the podcast interview with video.
Peggy Farren interviews famous photographers, beginner photographers, specialty photographers, travel gurus, and more on this weekly show. It airs on Fridays on the Understand Photography Facebook page, Youtube, and iTunes. The motto at Understand Photography is “We Simplify the Technical”. If you like things explained to you in a simple, step-by-step manner, you’ll love The Understand Photography Show.

Photo Cascadia’s Year In Images 2020
Each year the Photo Cascadia Team puts together a video revisiting the photographs, adventures and team antics that made the year memorable. While this was an odd year, even for landscape photography, we all managed to get out to some extent to enjoy the outdoors in a safe and responsible way.
Like everyone, as a team and individually, our work and lives have been impacted by the global pandemic, climate change, the economic situation and politics. We did our best to remain positive, spend time with the ones we love and find ways to continue doing things that make us who we are, particularly getting out in the landscape and creating photos.
We send you good wishes and hope you enjoy our 2020 Year In Images video. Perhaps it will lift your spirits and provide some hope for the year ahead.
Correct Wide-Angle Perspective Distortion Using Photoshop
In this video tutorial on my YouTube channel, I show how to correct the wide-angle distortion that happens when we tilt the camera down to emphasize the foreground and move the horizon toward the top third of the frame. I also wrote an article on it on the Photo Cascadia blog that includes before/after image examples if you want to check that out.
I'll also mention that this technique is included in my latest Photoshop course which is called Photoshop Essentials For Outdoor Photographers. There is an introductory price on the course through June 2020 using the code PSessentials25.

How To Plan A Photo With PhotoPills
In this tutorial, Rafael, the Bard of PhotoPills, gives me an extensive lesson on how to use the PhotoPills app to plan for the best sunset, full moon, Milky Way and star trails at the fallen arch at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon coast. PhotoPills users, as well as those just curious about how the PhotoPills app works, will find this session enlightening and helpful.

Fix Edge Halos With Darker Color Cloning
Ever have a problem with light edge halos cropping up in your images as you develop them? You often don't see them in screen size images, but they can ruin a nice print. In my latest video tutorial I show an easy and fairly quick way to make them disappear called Darker Color Cloning. I use it all the time and I think many photographers will find it useful. Check it out and leave a comment if you have any questions.
How To Plan Ahead For The Sun, Moon and Milky Way For Landscape Photography Using PhotoPills
Knowing when and where the sun, moon and milky way will be in the sky ahead of time is valuable information for landscape photographers. The PhotoPills app is the tool I use to plan landscape photography shoots. It is a powerful app and takes some learning, so in this video, I give some tips for basic planning ahead using the PhotoPills app including three main planning scenarios: 1 - Quickly seeing sun/moon rise and set times for any location. 2 - Knowing what the sun, moon and milky way will be doing at a specific location on a specific day. 3 - Determining when the best sun, moon or milky way alignment will happen at a location.
